Where it came from
Ghitu Encampment was originally introduced in the Urza's Legacy expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1999, designed as a utility land that could transform into a creature. This specific printing originates from the 1999 World Championship Decks, a product line that recreated the exact 75-card tournament decks used by the top eight finishers at the World Championship. These cards are easily distinguished from standard versions by their gold-bordered frames and unique backs, intended to serve as historical artifacts for players to study professional-level deck construction.
The art was provided by Donato Giancola, a highly regarded fantasy illustrator known for his realistic and atmospheric style. Giancola’s depiction of the encampment captures the rugged, volcanic aesthetic of the Ghitu tribe, blending mechanical function with thematic world-building. Because this version was produced for a commemorative set rather than for tournament play, it is prized primarily by collectors and historians of the game who value the preservation of competitive Magic’s legacy.
