Blasted Landscape was originally printed in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed to provide players with a colorless utility land that could be cycled to draw a card. It reflects a design philosophy from the late nineties that sought to balance the flexibility of land-based card advantage with the cost of tapping and sacrificing the card itself. This specific printing appeared in the Commander 2015 'Plunder the Graves' deck, which aimed to reintroduce older, utility-focused cards to a growing audience of multiplayer enthusiasts.

The artwork for this printing was created by Tony Szczudlo, who leaned into the bleak, post-apocalyptic aesthetic common to the Urza block's narrative of environmental decay.
