Where it came from
Blight Mound was introduced in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. Designed for the Witherbloom Witchcraft deck, the card embodies the essence of the college of Witherbloom, which focuses on the intersection of life and death, biology, and decay within the magical university of Strixhaven on the plane of Arcavios.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work frequently leans into atmospheric and ethereal fantasy themes. The design centers on the synergy between creature sacrifice and the creation of Pests, reinforcing the 'Aristocrats' style of play popular in Magic: The Gathering. Upon release, it was well-received by commander players for its ability to provide steady board presence and value through death triggers.
