Lore

Why it matters

This rare card functions as a powerful engine for token generation, rewarding players whenever their creatures perish by replacing them with fresh threats. Provenance

Where it came from

Blight Mound was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 set, specifically featured in the Witherbloom Witchcraft deck. The card is designed to synergize with sacrifice-themed strategies within the Golgari color identity, rewarding players for creatures dying by creating Pests, which are a recurring token type central to the set's mechanics.

The artwork was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who has contributed extensively to Magic: The Gathering. His depiction of the Blight Mound emphasizes the decaying, swamp-like aesthetic of the Witherbloom College of Strixhaven. The design aims to balance battlefield presence with engine-building potential, and it is generally regarded as a solid utility card for sacrifice-focused Commander builds.
