Blightbeetle was released in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, hitting shelves in July 2019. It was designed as an uncommon green creature intended to provide a specific tactical answer in the game's limited and constructed formats, acting as a hard counter to decks reliant on +1/+1 counters. By preventing opponents from placing those counters, it served as a functional piece of anti-synergy tech during an era where counter-heavy strategies were prevalent in the competitive scene.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the creature as a gnarled, sickly insectoid reflecting the black-aligned aesthetic of the Golgari swarm, despite its green color identity. The design focuses on the visual representation of decay and inhibition, consistent with the set's intent to provide players with accessible, straightforward tools for navigating diverse board states.
