Where it came from
Leyline of Sanctity was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2011, designed as part of a cycle of enchantments that can be played for free if they are in a player's opening hand. The Leyline cycle was conceived to provide powerful, niche tools that players could proactively use to shape the early game state against specific strategies, with the Sanctity variant specifically intended to provide protection against hand disruption and targeted effects.
The Core Set 2020 printing features evocative, mystical artwork by Johannes Voss, who rendered the card with a ethereal, flowing aesthetic that emphasizes its role as a barrier of divine protection. The card has been consistently well-received by the competitive community for its unique utility in sideboard play, remaining a staple card in formats like Modern and Legacy due to its ability to neutralize discard-heavy strategies and direct-damage tactics.
