Where it came from
Blind Zealot was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card depicts a devotee of the Phyrexians, an antagonistic mechanical-biological faction, reflecting the set's central theme of corruption and the total assimilation of the plane of Mirrodin. Its mechanics, which involve sacrificing the creature to destroy another, embody the fanatical self-sacrifice characteristic of the set's lore.
The artwork for this card was created by Steven Belledin, who illustrated several cards during the Scars of Mirrodin block. Belledin aimed to capture the unsettling, surgical horror aesthetic of the Phyrexians, focusing on the character's sightless state and their unwavering, eerie devotion. The design was received as a functional, flavorful inclusion in the set, fitting well into the aggressive black-mana strategies common in the New Phyrexia environment.
