Where it came from
Blood Sun was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to function as a powerful disruption tool within the game's mechanics, specifically targeting lands with triggered abilities, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the shifting, ancient landscapes of the plane of Ixalan and the encroaching power of the Immortal Sun.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who sought to capture the oppressive, mystical atmosphere of the setting. The visual design emphasizes the celestial scale of the phenomenon, moving away from standard fantasy tropes to depict a sun that feels both awe-inspiring and malevolent. Upon release, it was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency in hindering common land-based strategies across multiple formats.
