Where it came from
Blood Sun was released as part of the Rivals of Ixalan set in 2018, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The card features an enchantment that strips lands of their inherent abilities, reflecting the set's themes of ancient, volatile power tied to the plane of Ixalan. It was illustrated by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized vibrant, warm tones to capture the oppressive, sun-drenched atmosphere of the world.
The design was intended to serve as a disruption piece for competitive formats, punishing decks that rely on lands with complex triggered or activated abilities. Upon its introduction, the card gained significant attention in modern and legacy formats for its efficient casting cost and unique rules interaction, becoming a staple for sideboard strategies aimed at shutting down utility lands.
