Where it came from
Blood Tyrant was introduced as part of the Commander 2016 release, a set designed specifically for the popular multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format. The card itself draws from the long-standing tradition of Grixis-colored vampire creatures, intended to reward players for the chaotic, multi-player nature of the format by growing stronger as opponents lose life over the course of a game.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Karl Kopinski, a longtime contributor to the game known for his expressive, painterly style.
