Bloodhusk Ritualist was originally printed in the Worldwake expansion in 2010, but this specific iteration comes from the Commander 2017 preconstructed deck titled Vampiric Bloodlust. Released by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to showcase tribal synergies, specifically highlighting the history and mechanics of the Vampire creature type within Magic: The Gathering. The inclusion of the Ritualist in this collection was intended to provide players with a scalable late-game mana sink that forces opponents to discard cards, reinforcing the deck's focus on attrition and control.

The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific illustrator whose work defines much of the modern aesthetic for the game.
