Where it came from
Boarding Party was originally introduced as a common green creature card in the Commander Legends expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2020. Designed to support the 'Monarch' mechanic within a draft-focused environment, the card reflects the set's goal of bringing multiplayer-specific dynamics into the mainstream Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a rotating selection of reprints curated for Set Boosters—highlights its utility as a reliable tool for players seeking to generate card advantage in aggressive green decks.
The card's illustration, crafted by artist Lius Lasahido, features a dynamic composition that emphasizes the chaotic, raiding nature of the creature. Lasahido was tasked with visually translating the high-energy, seafaring theme of Commander Legends, utilizing bold colors and a sense of forward momentum to capture the feeling of an aquatic ambush. Upon its release, the card was received positively by the Commander community, valued primarily for its efficiency in maintaining pressure on opponents while simultaneously introducing the Monarch role to the table.
