Where it came from
Bog Humbugs, numbered as card 18 in the Happy Holidays set, emerged during the late 1980s as part of the Wacky Packages phenomenon. Produced by Topps, these trading cards were designed to parody popular consumer goods of the era. The creators sought to subvert the sweetness of holiday marketing by reimagining traditional seasonal treats as swamp-dwelling, grotesque caricatures.
The illustrations, often attributed to the stable of artists working for the Topps parody lines, utilized a satirical, high-detail comic style to mock the earnest packaging of the time. Upon their release, the cards were received primarily as humorous novelties for children, though they eventually gained a dedicated following among collectors who valued their commentary on commercial culture and their role in the history of satirical illustration.
