Provenance

Where it came from

The Bog-Strider Ash was released in 2007 as part of the Lorwyn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced the tribal-heavy Lorwyn plane, a world inspired by Celtic folklore and idyllic pastoral landscapes, characterized by a lighter, more whimsical aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the preceding dark, post-apocalyptic sets. The card was designed to highlight the 'Treefolk' creature type, a classic fantasy trope reinterpreted through the lens of Lorwyn's vibrant, autumn-hued ecology.

The artwork was created by illustrator Thomas M. Baxa. In his depiction, Baxa focused on the spindly, reaching limbs and root-like appendages that define the Treefolk's physiology within this setting. His design aimed to balance the creature's menacing, predator-like movement through the bog with the organic, bark-textured camouflage inherent to the species. The piece was well-received by players for its atmospheric contribution to the set's immersive, woodland-inspired environment.
