Where it came from
Bomb Squad was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set marked a departure from the previous block's focus, introducing mechanics like Threshold and Flashback to emphasize a more aggressive, creature-heavy style of play. The card was designed to reflect the chaotic and destructive nature of goblin-themed mechanics prevalent in early Magic history.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Dave Dorman, a celebrated artist known for his work in the Star Wars and comic book industries. Dorman employed his signature cinematic lighting and realistic painterly style to bring the goblins to life, moving away from the more whimsical or cartoonish depictions often associated with the creature type. Upon its release, Bomb Squad was viewed primarily as a niche card for red-aligned decks, recognized more for its distinct visual aesthetic than for competitive dominance in the broader tournament meta.
