Where it came from
Bombardment originated as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. These cards were designed as part of a recurring meta-experiment for the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, intended to simulate the raw, unpolished energy of internal design testing. They were distributed exclusively through convention-only booster packs, serving as a whimsical look behind the curtain of the game's development process.
The card features a distinct aesthetic departure from standard Magic releases, utilizing a stripped-back, monochrome playtest frame that emphasizes mechanical function over traditional illustration. This design choice was intended to showcase the card’s experimental nature, focusing on a high-variance, destructive effect that pushes the boundaries of standard game rules. The card received significant attention from the community for its surreal, tongue-in-cheek mechanics and its status as a rare artifact of the game's iterative creative culture.
