Where it came from
The Bone Saw was released as part of The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts, a special subset within the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Brothers' War. This set centers on the lore of the Antiquities War, a seminal conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra that defined the setting's history. The card features a distinct 'retro frame' aesthetic, designed to mimic the appearance of original Magic cards printed in the mid-1990s, offering a sense of nostalgia for veteran players.
The illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who crafted the imagery to fit the brutal, industrial tone of the Brothers' War setting. By reimagining this classic Equipment card within the visual language of the game's early years, the design team aimed to bridge the gap between contemporary mechanics and the game's foundational history. Upon release, these retro artifacts were widely collected for their thematic resonance and their ability to bring a vintage look to modern gameplay.
