Where it came from
Bontu's Monument was originally introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Amonkhet, part of a cycle of five legendary artifacts representing the gods of the plane. These monuments were designed to mechanically mirror the virtues and trials associated with each deity, with Bontu’s iteration rewarding players for casting black creature spells by draining opponents and facilitating card selection. The card reflects the grim, cycle-obsessed aesthetic of the Amonkhet setting, where the god of ambition demanded sacrifice and efficiency from the populace.
The artwork for the original release was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who captured the towering, brutalist architectural style prevalent in the city of Naktamun. The design aimed to convey the oppressive presence of the god Bontu, using high-contrast shadows and monolithic forms to emphasize the power of the black-aligned deity. Upon its release, the card became a staple in Commander formats and fringe competitive play, praised for its ability to provide consistent incremental value in black-heavy deck strategies.
