Provenance

Where it came from

The Vizier of Many Faces originated in the Amonkhet set of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2017, and was subsequently featured in the Aetherdrift Commander collection. The card was designed as a clone-effect creature, embodying the themes of the Amonkhet plane, which was inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology. In this setting, the Vizier serves as a member of the priesthood who facilitates the trials of the gods, acting as a shapeshifter who adopts the form and identity of others to navigate the rigid social and religious hierarchies of the city-state of Naktamun.

The illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is characterized by a surreal, ethereal aesthetic that leans into fluid forms and atmospheric lighting. Hamm intended to evoke the unsettling, malleable nature of the Vizier’s magic, using soft, desaturated tones to suggest a being caught between physical states. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility in Commander formats, where its ability to enter the battlefield as a copy of another creature provides a versatile, cost-effective answer to high-value threats.
