Where it came from
Bookwurm was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a creature residing within the Biblioplex, the central library of the Strixhaven University setting. Mechanically, it serves as an expensive, late-game threat that provides a mix of life gain and card draw, reflecting the scholarly yet imposing nature of the university's magical archives.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Ryan Pancoast, who leaned into a whimsical yet imposing design for the giant worm. Pancoast aimed to capture the essence of a creature composed of ancient scrolls and literature, grounding the fantastical element within the academic aesthetic of the set. It was well-received by players for its flavor-forward design, which effectively translates the concept of a 'book worm' into the game's high-fantasy context.
