Provenance

Where it came from

Bookwurm was illustrated by artist Billy Christian for the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. The card is part of the Strixhaven Art Series, a collection of high-quality, frame-less cards designed to showcase the intricate fantasy artwork featured throughout the set. These cards were specifically produced to be collectibles, highlighting the aesthetic direction of the Strixhaven plane, which emphasizes academic pursuit and magical scholarship within a university setting.

The design of Bookwurm leans into the whimsical, scholarly theme of the set, depicting a creature composed of scrolls and literary elements that embodies the library-centric lore of the Strixhaven campus. As an Art Series card, it was distributed within set booster packs as a premium collectible, intended for fans of the game's illustration rather than traditional competitive play. The work received positive attention from collectors for its inventive take on a classic book-themed monster, fitting perfectly within the set's broader motif of arcane research and discovery.
