Where it came from
Borrowed Knowledge was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the academic environment of the Strixhaven University, specifically the Silverquill college, which focuses on the intersection of language, light, and shadow. It embodies the thematic mechanic of choosing between two opposing effects, reflecting the school's focus on duality and rhetorical mastery.
The artwork for this piece was created by artist Livia Prima, who rendered the subject in the distinct collegiate aesthetic of the set. By depicting the act of magically extracting insight from another source, the illustration reinforces the set's broader narrative of students navigating arcane scholarly pursuits. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile utility spell for players utilizing the white-black color identity, praised for its flexibility in competitive play formats.
