Bottomless Pit

Bottomless Pit was released in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Stronghold. As part of the Rath Cycle, the set introduced mechanics focusing on graveyard recursion and creature manipulation, with this card serving as a strategic tool to force discard and disrupt opponent hand advantages. It was designed to offer players a continuous, global effect that penalized hoarding cards, fitting the aggressive and attrition-based identity of the Black color alignment during that era of the game.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Daren Bader, whose style during the late 1990s contributed significantly to the gothic and high-fantasy aesthetic of the early game. Bader utilized a dark, visceral visual language to convey the card's function, depicting a literal abyss that consumes the player's resources.
