What it does

Whenever a creature blocks, this enchantment deals 1 damage to that creature's controller.

"Takara, it's me!" shouted Starke. It was no use—she obeyed Volrath.

Provenance

Where it came from

Heat of Battle was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Rath Cycle, Stronghold focused on the narrative of the plane of Rath and introduced mechanics that prioritized combat interaction. The card was designed as a red enchantment intended to punish players for overextending their board state, fitting within red's color identity of chaos and tactical disruption during the damage-dealing phase.

The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Elliott, who contributed several pieces to the set. Elliott employed a visceral, high-contrast style typical of the late 90s aesthetic in the game, focusing on the immediate intensity of melee combat. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche sideboard option, appreciated by players for its ability to punish swarm-based strategies, though it remained a casual-level card rather than a competitive staple.
