What it does
Counter target spell unless its controller pays X mana. Clash with an opponent. If you win, that spell's controller mills four cards. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of their library, then puts that card on their choice of the top or bottom. A player wins if their card had a greater mana value.)

Where it came from
Broken Ambitions was released in 2007 as part of the Lorwyn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the idyllic but folklore-inspired world of Lorwyn, the card embodies the expansion's themes of tribal synergy and the encroaching transformation into Shadowmoor. Its design reflects the 'clash' mechanic introduced in this set, which gamifies the concept of fate and conflict between creatures.
The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, a longtime contributor to the game known for his dark, atmospheric, and slightly macabre fantasy aesthetic. Kendall sought to capture the psychological tension of a blue counterspell that forces a confrontation between combatants. Upon its release, it was regarded as a versatile tool for control decks, offering both a conditional counter effect and potential deck manipulation through its synergy with the clash mechanic.
