Brothers of Fire

Brothers of Fire was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fourth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore a darker, gothic-themed aesthetic that stood in contrast to the high-fantasy tone of earlier releases, emphasizing thematic elements of conflict and sacrifice. The expansion was produced during a period of rapid growth for the game, as the company sought to expand its mechanical depth and world-building reach.

The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, whose illustrative style was instrumental in defining the visual identity of early Magic expansions. The design focuses on the card's mechanical function, which centers on the concept of fire-based damage, a common motif within the red mana color pie. The set itself received significant attention for its evocative, somber atmosphere, and individual cards like this one are frequently cited by collectors for their role in establishing the visual and strategic foundations of mid-nineties trading card culture.
