Where it came from
Electric Eel was released in 1994 as part of The Dark, the fourth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set sought to expand the game's gothic and horror-themed atmosphere, contrasting with the high-fantasy motifs of earlier releases. The card functions as a blue-aligned creature that utilizes a coin-flipping mechanic, reflecting the volatile and unpredictable nature of the creature it depicts.
The artwork for this card was provided by Melissa Benson, an artist who contributed significantly to the early aesthetic of the game. Her illustration employs a dark, moody color palette consistent with the visual direction of The Dark, focusing on a stylized, ominous depiction of the eel. While the card is often cited for its unconventional gameplay risk, it remains a notable example of the experimental design philosophy prevalent in Magic's early history.
