Browbeat

Browbeat was originally printed as an uncommon in the Judgment expansion in 2002, designed to introduce a high-risk, high-reward mechanic to red color identity in Magic: The Gathering. The card allows an opponent to choose whether the controller draws three cards or deals five damage to them, forcing a difficult decision that tests the opponent's board state and life total. Its inclusion in the 2006 Time Spiral Timeshifted set served as a nostalgic nod to popular, mechanically distinct cards from the game's past, featuring the original card frame to differentiate it from contemporary releases.

The card's illustration by Kev Walker is renowned for its intense, kinetic depiction of magical energy, capturing the aggressive and chaotic nature of red mana. Walker, a long-time contributor to the game, aimed to convey the psychological pressure placed on the opponent through a visceral visual style. Upon its initial release and subsequent inclusion in the Timeshifted subset, the card became a staple of 'burn' and casual aggressive decks, celebrated for its ability to create dramatic moments at the table regardless of which outcome the opponent chooses.
