Provenance

Where it came from

Browbeat was originally released in the Judgement expansion set in 2002. Designed as a red sorcery, the card introduced a unique mechanics-based gamble where the opponent chooses between taking five damage or allowing the caster to draw three cards. This design sought to provide red decks with a meaningful source of card advantage, a rarity for the color at the time, while leaning into the chaotic flavor of red mana.

The version included in the 2010 Premium Deck Series: Fire and Lightning featured exclusive new artwork by Greg Staples. This series was curated to showcase red-aligned strategies, and the inclusion of Browbeat was intended to highlight the color's aggressive versatility. Upon its release, the card remained a subject of ongoing debate among players regarding its efficiency and the agency it grants the opponent.
