Where it came from
Bushwhack was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisited the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra. The card depicts a thematic moment in the lore where the forces of the Brotherhood of Gix conduct an ambush, emphasizing the brutal and industrial nature of the war depicted in the set.
The card was illustrated by David Auden Nash, whose work captures the aggressive kinetic energy of the scene. It was designed as a red sorcery intended to support aggressive gameplay archetypes, focusing on rapid board development and combat buffs. Players generally received it as a functional, low-cost utility spell that fit well into draft environments and tempo-based red decks.
