Where it came from
In the Trenches was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion designed to revisit the central conflict between Urza and Mishra. The set was conceived as a top-down exploration of a pivotal lore event, focusing on the mechanical and destructive nature of the war between two brothers. This card represents the gritty, frontline experience of the conflict, emphasizing the relentless toll taken on the soldiers caught in the crossfire of their colossal artifice.
The card’s visual direction was handled by illustrator Eric Deschamps, who sought to capture a somber, cinematic perspective of trench warfare within the high-fantasy setting. By focusing on the weary expressions of soldiers rather than the gleaming machinery of the antagonists, the artwork aims to ground the massive scale of the Brothers' War in human suffering. It received positive feedback from players for its evocative contribution to the set’s atmosphere, successfully grounding the grand scope of the story in the reality of the foot soldier.
