Where it came from
The Butcher of Malakir debuted in the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2010. It was designed as a high-cost black creature intended to capitalize on the set's sacrifice-themed mechanics. The character, a member of the vampire race native to the plane of Zendikar, exemplifies the parasitic and aggressive nature of the set's predatory factions.
The card's illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized dramatic shadows and stark lighting to emphasize the vampire's imposing silhouette and lethal presence. The Butcher of Malakir has remained a consistent inclusion in black-aligned Commander decks due to its ability to force opponents to sacrifice creatures, and it was subsequently reprinted in the Commander Anthology set in 2017 to provide easier access to players engaging with the multiplayer format.
