Provenance

Where it came from

The Butcher of Malakir card was originally released in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Worldwake, representing a powerful vampire lord aligned with the plane of Zendikar. This specific iteration is part of a Secret Lair Drop, a specialized series launched by Wizards of the Coast that features curated reprints with unique, high-concept artistic treatments, often collaborating with artists outside the traditional fantasy gaming sphere.

This version of the Butcher features a distinctive stylized aesthetic that departs from the standard high-fantasy illustration style typically found in the core sets. The design was intended to offer collectors a visually striking alternative, reflecting the recurring themes of gothic horror and blood-magic central to the vampire creature type within the game's broader lore and artistic evolution.
