Where it came from
Butcher's Glee was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as an uncommon instant for the Black color identity, fitting into the set's central theme of a war-torn world reshaped by the presence of dragons. The card serves as a representative example of the 'Bolster' mechanic introduced in the Khans of Tarkir block, which emphasized themes of strength and tactical resilience in combat.
The artwork was illustrated by Ryan Alexander Lee, who sought to capture the visceral and aggressive aesthetic of the Mardu Horde. The composition depicts a warrior mid-strike, emphasizing the card's mechanical utility of simultaneously bolstering a creature's durability and granting it lifelink. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in the Limited formats of the time, where its ability to swing a combat outcome through both offensive and defensive buffs made it a staple consideration for players drafting Black decks.
