Where it came from
Sight of the Scalelords was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the alternate timeline of Tarkir, a plane dominated by dragon lords after the time-traveling meddling of the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol. This card represents the Abzan Houses, a faction characterized by their endurance and connection to the dragon spirits of their ancestors.
The artwork was illustrated by Ryan Alexander Lee, who sought to capture the stoic, rugged aesthetic of the Abzan warriors. The design emphasizes the card's function as an enchantment that rewards players for maintaining a resilient board state. Upon its release, it was primarily utilized in limited formats and niche Commander decks, recognized for its ability to bolster defensive strategies in long, grindy matches.
