Where it came from
The Butterfly token was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These tokens are produced by Wizards of the Coast to represent temporary game states created by specific cards, such as those with the 'create a token' mechanic. The inclusion of unique tokens within Commander decks allows players to track board states efficiently while adding thematic flair to their games.
The design of this token features the whimsical, ephemeral aesthetic associated with the March of the Machine expansion, which focused on a multiversal invasion and the recovery of various planes. While the specific illustrator is part of the broader collaborative effort for the set's token suite, the design follows the established art direction for Magic: The Gathering, emphasizing vibrant colors and high-fantasy creature detail to maintain consistency across the game's expansive card library.
