Where it came from
Buy Your Silence was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s-inspired metropolis controlled by five warring crime families, with this specific card being associated with the Obscura, an organization of information brokers and magical spies. It was designed as a white-aligned spell that reflects the set's core narrative focus on bribery, coercion, and the manipulation of power within the city's noir-inspired landscape.
The card’s visual direction was handled by illustrator Marta Nael, who captured a tense, atmospheric scene of an operative delivering a hush-money payment in a dimly lit alley. The artwork aligns with the Art Deco and urban fantasy aesthetic established for New Capenna, emphasizing the shadows and urban corruption central to the faction's operations. The card was generally received by players as a flavorful, albeit mechanically niche, representation of the set's political and crime-thriller identity.
