Where it came from
Bygone Bishop is a card from the Magic: The Gathering expansion Crimson Vow Commander, released in 2021 as a tie-in to the main Innistrad: Crimson Vow set. The card was originally printed in the Shadows over Innistrad set in 2016, designed to reflect the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane. Its presence in the Commander deck highlights the recurring theme of spirits and investigation mechanics that define the white-aligned cleric archetype within the game's lore.
The art for the card was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the classic, moody visual language of the setting to depict a ghostly figure offering guidance to a living soul. The design focuses on the synergy between creating Clue tokens and creatures entering the battlefield, which has made it a stable choice for players interested in card advantage and resource management within the white color identity.
