Where it came from
By Gnome Means was released as part of the Un-set expansion Unstable in December 2017. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, the set was intended to offer a humorous, silver-bordered play experience that explored mechanics too unconventional or chaotic for standard tournament play. The card reflects the set's central theme of mad science and mechanical tinkering, specifically leaning into the Gnomes' identity within the game's lore as diminutive, gadget-obsessed creatures.
The artwork was provided by fantasy illustrator Kev Walker, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Walker’s depiction captures the whimsical, cluttered aesthetic common to the set, focusing on the frantic energy of an invention gone wrong. As with other cards in Unstable, the design prioritizes interactive, lighthearted gameplay over mechanical optimization, and the card was generally well-received by players who enjoyed the unconventional, experimental spirit of the silver-bordered environment.
