Where it came from
Byode, Inverse Sun was produced in 2021 as part of the Heroes of the Realm series, a special set of Magic: The Gathering cards created by Wizards of the Coast. These cards are not sold in boosters or retail stores; instead, they are printed specifically to honor company employees who have made exceptional contributions to the development of the game over the preceding year. This tradition serves as an internal recognition program, cementing the names of designers, developers, and staff members into the lore of the game itself.
The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator known for her elegant and high-fantasy aesthetic within the Magic brand. The design reflects the character Byode, a mythical figure associated with the reversal of solar properties, consistent with the set's thematic emphasis on abstract and powerful entities. As a limited-run promotional item intended for private distribution among staff, the card is widely regarded by collectors as a rare piece of Magic history, representing the intersection of corporate milestone recognition and the game's expansive artistic legacy.
