Where it came from
Ersta, Friend to All was released in 2021 as part of the Heroes of the Realm set, a unique series of promotional cards produced by Wizards of the Coast. These cards are not sold in boosters or available through standard retail channels; instead, they are custom-designed as personal thank-you gifts for company employees who have made significant contributions to the development of Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a niche tradition of internal recognition, serving as a tangible mark of professional achievement within the game's design and production teams.
The card’s design, featuring art by Johannes Voss, reflects the thematic spirit of community and collaboration inherent to the Heroes of the Realm series. Voss, a well-regarded illustrator in the tabletop gaming space, utilized a vibrant, whimsical aesthetic that aligns with the card’s supportive mechanics. While these cards are mechanically legal for play in casual formats, their rarity and specific purpose mean they are primarily treated as prestige collectibles rather than functional game pieces.
