Where it came from
Cabal Initiate was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set, a specialized product designed primarily for the Modern format in Magic: The Gathering. The card was created to provide efficient, graveyard-focused utility, reflecting the game's long-standing design tradition of featuring the dark, necromantic Cabal cultists originating from the Dominaria plane.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the game who frequently depicts figures with strong dramatic lighting and intricate costume details. In this piece, she aimed to capture the essence of a liturgical figure performing a grim ritual, grounding the card's mechanical ability to discard cards in the thematic flavor of blood sacrifice and forbidden knowledge.
