Provenance

Where it came from

Cabal Conditioning was released in 2003 as part of the Scourge expansion, the final set in the Onslaught block of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the concept of high-mana costs and the powerful, game-altering effects they justify, positioning this card as a high-impact disruption tool meant to punish opponents who hold onto large hands of cards.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, whose work often features the dark, atmospheric gothic aesthetics prevalent in the early 2000s era of the game. Staples intended to convey the oppressive, ritualistic nature of the Cabal, an infamous villainous organization from the lore of the Otarian continent. Upon release, it was viewed as a niche but effective discard spell, favored by players who enjoyed control-heavy strategies.
