Where it came from
Calix, Guided by Fate was released in 2023 as part of the 'March of the Machine: The Aftermath' expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set served as an epilogue to the larger 'March of the Machine' storyline, focusing on the immediate aftermath of the Phyrexians' defeat and the resulting changes to the multiverse. The card depicts Calix, a character originally created by the goddess Klothys to serve as her agent of destiny, now grappling with his own path following the sudden closure of the Therosian underworld.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a frequent contributor to the game known for his painterly style and ability to convey ethereal, magical energy. In this depiction, Calix is shown reflecting on his purpose now that his original directive has been rendered moot, with the design emphasizing his newfound autonomy. The card received attention from the player community for its focus on character development within the game's broader narrative framework, highlighting the personal stakes for figures caught in the wake of multiverse-spanning events.
