Where it came from
Tolarian Contempt was released in May 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set March of the Machine: The Aftermath. This set was designed as a narrative epilogue to the expansive Phyrexian Invasion arc, focusing on the immediate consequences for the multiverse's legendary characters and iconic locations. The card depicts a specific moment at the Tolarian Academy, reflecting the tension and decay following the conflict.
The card’s visual direction was handled by illustrator Justine Cruz, who sought to capture a sense of somber stillness and magical fallout. The design was received as a functional tool for control archetypes, emphasizing the set's identity as a collection of high-impact, story-focused cards that move the broader Magic: The Gathering lore forward rather than serving as a traditional booster expansion.
