Where it came from
Call of the Herd was originally printed in the Odyssey set in 2001, designed by Mike Elliott, Brian Tinsman, Tyler Bielman, and Skaff Elias. It gained notoriety during its initial run for its efficiency and the flashback mechanic, which allowed players to cast the spell twice from their graveyard, effectively creating two creatures for the price of one card. This made it a staple in green-based aggressive decks throughout the early 2000s.
The 2017 Modern Masters printing features updated artwork by Chris Rahn. Rahn’s interpretation of the card depicts the signature elephant herd charging with a focus on dramatic lighting and motion, fitting the set's goal of reprinting iconic cards with refreshed aesthetics. Modern Masters 2017 was designed as a curated limited experience that celebrated the history of the Modern format, and Call of the Herd was included to provide players with a recognized, reliable creature-based utility card.
