Provenance

Where it came from

Call of the Herd was originally released in the 2001 Odyssey expansion, quickly becoming a staple in green-based tournament decks due to its efficiency and the flashback mechanic that offered built-in card advantage. The version from the 2002 World Championship Decks was specifically included in the decklist piloted by Simon Gortzen, who utilized the card to leverage aggressive board presence during the 2002 World Championship tournament.

The card features artwork by Carl Critchlow, who utilized a visceral, painterly style to capture the stampeding energy of the beasts described in the card's effect. The World Championship Decks series was produced by Wizards of the Coast to allow players to play with exact replicas of high-level competitive decks, distinguishable from standard versions by their gold borders and unique back designs, which served as a collectible record of the shifting competitive meta at the time.
