Where it came from
Call of the Herd was originally printed as a rare card in the 2001 Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to showcase the game's new graveyard-focused mechanics, allowing players to cast the card a second time from their graveyard, which provided significant utility and card advantage in green-based decks of the era.
The version from the 2002 World Championship Decks was a direct reproduction of the deck list used by professional player Carlos Romao. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a way to allow fans to play with the exact tournament-winning configurations used during the championship, featuring gold-bordered cards with the player's signature printed on the face to distinguish them from standard tournament cards.
