Cancel

Cancel was originally printed as a common card in the Lorwyn expansion in 2007, serving as a functional reprint of the classic card Counterspell but adjusted for the game's modern power-level requirements. It became a staple of the blue color identity within Magic: The Gathering, offering a straightforward, albeit costlier, way to negate an opponent's spell. This version appeared in the 2012 Planechase set, which utilized preconstructed decks to introduce players to the chaotic, planar-shifting variant of the game.

The 2012 release featured new, atmospheric artwork by illustrator Karl Kopinski, who brought a dark and tactical aesthetic to the piece. His design aimed to emphasize the sudden, decisive nature of nullifying a magical effect, departing from the more abstract depictions found in earlier iterations. As part of a supplemental product, this printing was received as a functional necessity for the deck's balance, appreciated by players for its clear utility in the unpredictable, high-variance environment of Planechase.
