Where it came from
The Carnifex Demon was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set marked the return of the plane of Mirrodin, introducing the narrative of the Phyrexian invasion, a corrupted mechanical force that would serve as the central antagonist for the block's storyline.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Raymond Swanland, whose distinctively aggressive and jagged style was frequently employed during this era to depict the grotesque, bio-mechanical nature of the Phyrexians. The card's design features a 'proliferate' mechanic, a signature ability of the set that allowed players to increase the number of counters on permanents, perfectly reflecting the parasitic and infectious theme of the Phyrexian faction.
