Where it came from
Carnival Barker was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in the game's history for blending 'silver-bordered' un-set humor and mechanics with black-bordered cards intended for use in official tournament play. Designed as a top-down homage to retro science-fiction and carnival aesthetics, the set sought to bring a playful, aesthetic-heavy vibe to the broader game landscape.
The art for Carnival Barker, illustrated by David Sladek, leans into the surrealist, space-age circus theme central to Unfinity’s narrative. The design process focused on evoking a sense of nostalgia for classic midway attractions while incorporating the futuristic, cosmic elements of the set's central 'Myra the Magnificent's Intergalactic Astrotorium of Fun' theme. It was received by the player community as a thematic anchor for the set's attraction-based gameplay mechanics.
